✏︎ Eindhoven Library
Eindhoven Library asked Visueeltjes to create a visualisation. The visualisation is aimed at parents with low language proficiency and their children participating in the project “Samen Thuis in Taal” (Together at Home in Language). This project stimulates children’s language development and involves and supports parents in this process. Eindhoven Library’s idea was to create a placemat: the children see the placemat every day at mealtimes, and it also functions as a search image showing all the basic words. Word lists are available, the first 150 basic words that are easy for a beginner in Dutch to know. Think of “book,” “apple,” “girl,” “cabinet,” as well as colors and numbers. The students checked off many words that were incorporated into the search image.
The goal of the visualisation is to playfully encourage children to discover and learn new words. It also provides parents with accessible information about borrowing books from the library.

Visualisation
The final result is a visualization consisting of two sides. Printed on a placemat, as this is used daily by this target group. The front serves as a search image with as many “basic words” as possible and with five search tasks hidden in the designed library among various objects and events. “Search! 1 gnome, 2 mice, 4 presents, and 5 paper airplanes.” This game element helps beginners discover and practice words in an accessible way. The back shows a four-step visual explanation of how to borrow a book, as that can be a barrier for some.
